Overview

The Scooter Cops of Bed-Stuy tells the story of Scooter Joe and Kenny, a black and white cop duo that was rare in the 1970s, who became legends in the neighborhood of Bed-Stuy by making themselves an effective neighborhood crime-fighting scooter patrol. They were scooter cops assigned to check potholes and issue parking tickets; however, they decided to go after bigger game - murderers and drug pushers.

"An officer's best weapon is not his gun, it's his ability to communicate"

The Scooter Cops of Bed-Stuy challenges the audience to ask questions rather than provide them with answers. The story of the Scooter Cops doesn’t condemn police - it challenges them to personally reflect on the way they interact with the community.

What lessons can both the community and police department learn from Scooter Joe and Kenny?

In Production 2017

The Scooter Cops of Bed-Stuy is a broadcast feature length documentary and is currently in production. We have filmed over 50 hours of verité, B-Roll and interview footage. We are currently scheduling and filming remaining interviews with historians, politicians, authors and academics who are helping build context for the history of Bed-Stuy as well as several other former police officers who worked with Joe and Kenny. We are in pre-production for our first re-creation scenes that we'll be filming this Spring.

The Scooter Cops of Bed-Stuy is produced independently and is currently financed with personal funds. The Scooter Cops of BedStuy was recently selected as one of five finalists in the Paley Center for New Media Doc Pitch Contest, received fiscal sponsorship from IFP, and has been invited to the Big Sky Documentary Festival Pitch Event.

What is the appropriate role of the police in a community?

"...unarmed black Americans [are] five times as likely as unarmed white Americans to be shot and killed by a police officer."                                                                      - Wesley Lowery, Washington Post July 11, 2016

The Scooter Cops of Bed-Stuy straddles the perceived divide between police and civilians. It is told from the perspective of two highly effective police officers, one Jewish and the other African-American, who did their job but treated civilians with respect. They worked a difficult beat, but they never strayed from a philosophy of words over weapons.

Theirs is a message of respect, trust and communication.
